How to judge sunglasses quality: a 5-point checklist
Five checks you can do in under two minutes — in a store, or the moment a delivery arrives. No lab required.
1 · The hinge test
Open and close the temples slowly. Good hinges move with smooth, even resistance and no play. Look at the hinge itself: riveted metal (visible metal pins/rivets) outlasts hinges molded straight into plastic, which loosen and can't be repaired. Borrowed by someone with a bigger head? A quality frame springs back instead of staying stretched.

2 · The polarization test
Hold the glasses in front of an LCD screen (your phone with brightness up) and rotate the lens 90°. True polarized lenses visibly darken the screen at certain angles. No change at any angle means the "polarized" label is just a tint. Film-laminated polarization may pass this test at first but can peel or bubble at the edges — check the lens rim for a visible film layer.
Ours: true polarized lenses. Honest note: that same physics means some LCD car dashboards may look dimmer — normal for every real polarized lens.
3 · The UV spec, not the UV vibe
Dark lenses without UV protection are worse than no sunglasses — your pupils dilate behind the tint. Look for an explicit UV400 rating (blocks wavelengths up to 400 nm, covering UVA and UVB). "UV protection" with no number, or no marking at all, is a red flag. You can't verify UV at home, so buy from sellers who publish the spec.

4 · The material check
Run a finger along the frame edges and look at the surface in the light. Quality acetate (including bio-acetate) is polished from sheet material: smooth edges, deep even gloss, no seam lines. Cheap injection molding leaves visible mold seams, sharp edges and a "hollow" plasticky feel. Ask what the material actually is — a seller who can't name it is telling you something.

5 · The one-minute wear test
Put them on for a full minute. Quality shows as absence: no pinching at the temples, no pressure on the nose bridge, no sliding when you look down or bend over. Weight matters — a well-built pair should be light enough to forget. Check the size numbers (lens/bridge/temple in mm) against a pair that already fits you.
